F— it, let’s have all our New Year’s resolutions be about sex this year

6 sexy things to put on your list of goals for 2024

The new year is right around the corner, so you know what that means…vision board parties, long-term goal setting, and resolutions tailored specifically to 2024. You might already be thinking about reading a certain number of books each month, going to the gym consistently, or aiming for a promotion at your job—all of which are probably very reasonable and great ideas. But there are also plenty of resolutions you can put on your list that will help you spice up your sex life, regardless of whether you’re single or you’ve been with your partner for years.

So set a goal to learn some new tricks, act out your wildest fantasy, or express yourself sexually in a whole new way. Start your year off right with these 6 sexy New Year’s resolution ideas for 2024:

1. Make a sexual inventory checklist, also known as a “yes, no, maybe” list

Want an idea of your partner’s range of interests in the bedroom (or maybe outside it!), but need help initiating the conversation? Start with a “yes, no, maybe” list to identify and share your levels of desire to try specific sexual activities!

Fold a sheet of paper into three sections and then label each column “yes,” “no,” and “maybe.” The “yes” column means, “Yes, I’m into it or want to try it,“ the “no” column means, “No, it’s not for me/I’m not open to it),” and the “maybe” column means, “Maybe I could be interested with more conversation, information, and/or in a specific situation.”

There are plenty of examples online that you can use to brainstorm ideas of sexual activities to put on your list. Make one for yourself and one for your partner. Each of you will sort each activity, and then you’ll compare your lists to see what new things you both want to try.

2. Explore a kink

The world of kink is vast. Even the term “kink” covers a huge variety of things. You may already know that there’s something kinky you’ve always wanted to do, or you may have a general idea of what you like but need some help thinking up specific kinky things to try. Either way, 2024 could be the year you find out if that thing feels as good as you think it will.

3. Be creative with role play

Role play is a great way to explore kinks, act out fantasies, play with power dynamics, and much more. Start with what you hope to get out of it in mind, then figure out roles for all involved. Costumes are optional. Your role play can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it—and you can have recurring roles if you find something you really like.

4. Create your own challenge

Sometimes it’s the little tweaks to your regular sex life that can create the most adventure. Have fun with your partner by creating a challenge or game for yourselves. Here are some ideas for inspiration:

  • Every time you have sex, do it in a different new spot in your home.
  • Try three new sex positions every week or every month.
  • Hold off on the sex but tease each other with sexts and flirting.
  • Randomly pick something from your “yes, no, maybe” list to try each time you have sex.
  • Turn dry January into wet January (we’re so sorry for saying that) by having sex every day for the entire month.

5. Simulate a threesome using a high-tech sex toy

Finding a third can be tricky and time-consuming, especially if you’ve never had a threesome before. If you’re looking for a creative and convenient way to ease yourself into three-way sex, then consider having a digital threesome! Here’s how. One person can use an automatic stroker or a toy that simulates sucking or tongue flicking, while their partner focuses on the rest of their body parts.

6. Get more comfortable with your rear

There’s more to anal besides penis-in-butt sex. You can use anal beads, butt plugs, or strap-on dildos, or receive a delicate massage around your perineum. And there’s also oral sex involving the anus (a.k.a. rimming), which doesn’t have to include any kind of penetration. Keep in mind STIs are still a risk when you do butt stuff, but using condoms, internal condoms, gloves, and dental dams can help protect you. Shout out to dental dams for also keeping the poop germs out of your mouth.
