Some vaginal discharge is normal. The extra discharge you are experiencing from using the ring is also probably normal. After a couple of cycles, this discharge may go back to normal.

Also, the ring may protect you from a bacterial infection that can occur in the vagina called bacterial vaginosis (BV).

If you’re concerned that the vaginal discharge that you’re experiencing may be caused by an infection, visit a health care provider.

The ring can decrease blood loss during periods and possibly reduce PMS symptoms and acne. There’s also the chance of a decreased risk of endometrial and ovarian cancer and benign breast conditions.

The hormonal IUDs, shot, implant, and progestin-only pill have all been shown to overall reduce periods for most people. For some people, that means they don’t get a period at all, but for others it can cause bleeding when you aren’t expecting it even if you have less total bleeding.

You can use the pill or the ring continuously to intentionally skip your period altogether.
